Dr. Sue
Veterinarian
Dr. Sue is excited to join the excellent crew at Grey Cove Veterinary Health Centre. Previously she has been an associate veterinarian at a couple of high-level practices in Moncton since 2009, with over 30 years of experience in medicine, dentistry, and soft tissue surgery in companion animal medicine. Special interests include diabetes, dermatology, and internal medicine. Compassionate communication with owners about their pet’s health care in developing a treatment plan that works for the pet and owner is a primary focus. Dr. Sue is mother to 3 adult children, Laura, Patrick, and Emily. Her daughters live in Yellowknife and Glasgow, Scotland, and are the focus of much of her vacation and travel time. Patrick lives in Moncton, together with dog Phoebe and cat Malcolm. As a member of the Greater Moncton Women’s Progress Club and the Friends of the Zoo board at the Magnetic Hill Zoo, Dr. Sue can be seen volunteering at events around the Moncton area. To relax, Susan can be found in the garden at home, reading, doing handicrafts, and an occasional bit of baking.
Questions
-
What is your dog's name and how did you choose it?
My dog’s name is Phoebe, chosen by my kids 11 years ago in honor of Phoebe Buffay from Friends. Her quirky, lovable personality makes the name a perfect fit!
-
What’s the most unusual patient you’ve ever cared for?
Many years ago, early in my career, I walked into an exam room expecting to see a pet waiting with its owner. Instead, I found a tall young man with no visible pet. When I asked if his animal was in the car, he unzipped his jacket, unbuttoned his shirt, and pulled out… a snake!
It was definitely a test of my composure as I reminded myself that every owner loves their exotic pets just as much as I love my dog and cat. The snake had suffered a thermal burn from a heating pad left in its enclosure while the owners were away, requiring antibiotic injections for a few days.
During this experience, I learned a lot about snakes, including their care needs and even their diet—mice for smaller snakes, for example. While I still can’t imagine carrying a pet under my clothing, the experience gave me a new appreciation for the bond people share with their unusual companions.

What is your favorite animal, and what do you love most about it?
My favorite animal is the giraffe! I’ve had the chance to see them up close at the Toronto Zoo, African Lion Safari, and in Florida, and I’m always captivated by their charm. Their faces are adorable, their graceful movements fascinating, and their incredibly unique bodies are a true marvel of nature. It’s amazing how such extremes in design enable them to thrive!
-
What resources do you use to stay updated on changes in veterinary medicine?
Staying current in veterinary medicine is easier than ever with the wide variety of resources available. Online videos, webinars, and global in-person conferences provide valuable insights into the latest advancements. Specialist forums and improved communication tools also foster collaboration and knowledge-sharing among veterinarians, ensuring we stay at the forefront of care.

How do you collaborate with pet owners to provide the best care possible for their animals?
Collaboration with pet owners is essential to creating a successful treatment plan. Owners play a crucial role—they not only cover the cost of care but also administer medications and carry out daily tasks.
The pet’s cooperation is another factor! They don’t read the take-home notes explaining why antibiotics are important or why soaking that sore paw twice a day is necessary.
Clear communication is key. I take the time to explain the risks, benefits, side effects, and alternative options, working closely with the owner to develop a personalized plan that ensures the best possible outcome for their pet.
